Zircon (ZrSiO4) is an accessory mineral in igneous and metamorphic rocks that can host a variety of trace elementsZircon forms a solid solution with hafnon (HfSiO4)The partitioning of various trace elements, including the rare earth elements, between Zr1-xHfxSiO4, where x varies between 0 and 1, and an andesitic silicate melt were determined at 1250 ˚C and atmospheric pressure. The partition coefficients vary systematically with the Hf content of the crystal and were fit to the lattice strain mode. The Young's modulus was also found to vary systematically from 597±48 GPa for zircon to 683±55 GPa for hafnon. The results show that the shape of the REE pattern of zircon will vary with its Hf content.
